Glucocorticoids and the immune system
Steroids are natural or synthetic fatty substances that contain four carbon rings, including the sex hormones. Corticosteroids are steroid hormones that are naturally produced (endogenous) in the adrenal glands. They suppress the immune response and decrease inflammation. There are two types of corticosteroids - glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Technically, the term corticosteroid refers to both steroids, but it is often used as a synonym for glucocorticoids.
HIV drug resistance testing
Drug resistance testing is used to determine whether a patient with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has a mutated form of the virus that does not respond to antiretroviral therapy (ART).
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are medications that reduce inflammation (swelling) and pain (analgesic). The term "nonsteroidal" is used to distinguish the drugs from steroids. Unlike NSAIDs, steroidal drugs are synthetic hormones that are used to stop the inflammatory response in the body. NSAIDs are non-narcotic, and therefore, non-addictive.
Interferon treatment
Interferon medication is a man-made version of a protein that is involved in the immune system. The body produces interferons to help fight against disease and infection. These proteins stimulate immune cells to destroy body cells that have become infected with viruses or cancer.
Immunosupressants
Immunosuppressants are drugs that are used to weaken the body's immune system. The immune system protects the body from infections and diseases.
CNS stimulants
Central nervous system (CNS) stimulants, also called psychomotor stimulants or uppers, are a class of drugs that speed up physical and mental processes. They temporarily make patients feel more alert and improve mood.
