Lice/scabies
Lice and scabies are two types of skin conditions that are caused by ectoparasites, or parasites that that live on the outside of their hosts. A parasite obtains nourishment and/or protection from another organism, called a host.
Fungal infections
Some organisms, called fungi, may cause diseases in humans. When a fungus's tiny reproductive cells (spores) enter the body or come into contact with the skin and begin to multiply, it is called a fungal infection.
Nail care
Nail care refers to the proper maintenance of the fingernails and toenails. Nail care is important because it helps prevent nail problems, such as fungal nail infections and ingrown toenails. However, in some cases, nail problems are symptoms of an underlying medical condition, such as an infection throughout the body.
Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome
Hyperimmunoglobulin E syndrome (HIES), also called Job syndrome, is an inherited immunodeficiency that is characterized by recurrent bacterial infections, skin abscesses, and high levels of immunoglobulin E (IgE). Immunoglobulin (Ig), also called antibodies, is secreted by immune system cells to detect antigens (foreign substances like bacteria and viruses that enter the body). Once the antibodies attach to the antigen, white blood cells destroy the antigen.
Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis
Eosinophilic pustular folliculitis (EPF) is a recurrent skin disorder that causes bumps and/or pimples to form near hair follicles. Clumps of white blood cells called eosinophils form these skin abnormalities. While the condition is not life threatening, it may cause intense itching.
Wound healing
A wound is a break in the outer layer of the skin, called the epidermis. Wounds are usually caused by cuts or scrapes. Different kinds of wounds may be treated differently from one another, depending upon how they happened and how serious they are. Other wounds include puncture wounds, lacerations (cuts), pressure sores, anal fissures, extravasations (a drug accidentally going outside of a vein causing tissue damage), skin damage caused by incontinence (lack of bladder control), skin graft healing (split thickness), diabetic ulcers, and surgical skin flap ischemia (lack of blood flow to surgically attached skin).
Insect bites - from Natural Standard
In general, biting insects themselves are not dangerous because allergic reactions are rare. However, many insects (like mosquitoes and ticks) can transmit diseases like malaria, Lyme disease, and the West Nile virus to humans.
Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome
Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome (BRBNS) is a rare condition characterized by the malformation of the cutaneous (skin) and gastrointestinal (stomach and intestines) veins. Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart.
Hair disorders
Hair disorders may occur when excessive amounts of hair grow or fall out.
They may also occur if the hair lacks pigment in certain areas or if the hair becomes gray prematurely. These conditions can be temporary or permanent, depending on the cause.
Perspiration
It is normal for people to perspire, or sweat, when they are warm or experiencing emotional stress. Sweating helps maintain proper body temperature by keeping the body cool. When people are under stress, sweat glands contract, which pushes sweat to the skin surface. People may lose several quarts of fluid in perspiration.
Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) is an extremely versatile bacterium that can cause infections ranging in severity from mild to severe in humans and animals. S. aureus is normally found on the skin or in the nasal passages of about one third of the population. Most individuals harboring S. aureus are not ill but are "colonized" with the bacteria. Individuals who are colonized with S. aureus may develop infection if the bacteria enter the body through a break in the skin or nasal passages. Individuals who are colonized have the ability to spread the organism, even if they are not ill. If the bacteria are transmitted to another individual, they may cause infection in that individual. The ability of bacteria to resist the effects of an antibiotic is called antibiotic resistance. During the past decade, antibiotic resistance has increased tremendously worldwide.
Facial flushing
Facial flushing occurs when there is increased blood flow to the face causing the face to suddenly become red. This may also cause the face to feel warm or hot. Sometimes the neck and chest may also become red. Most people have experienced facial flushing when they have felt embarrassed (blushing) or angry.
Candidiasis and HIV
Mucocutaneous candidiasis is an opportunistic infection caused by the fungus Candida albicans that can affect the mouth (oral candidiasis, oral thrush), esophagus (esophageal candidiasis) or vagina (vulvovaginal candidiasis, yeast infections). Opportunistic infections occur in individuals who are immunocompromised (weakened immune systems), such as patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Skin rash
Rash is a general term that describes a change in color and texture in the skin. A rash generally causes temporary red patches or bumps in the skin, and may be itchy and/or tender. The affected skin is often swollen.
Dercum's disease
Dercum's disease is a very rare condition in which patients experience a growth of painful fat tissue. The condition is progressive and becomes worse over time. Patients with Dercum's disease may develop painful fatty lumps and nodules, called lipomas, or they may experience more diffuse pain throughout fatty tissue. The pain may be extreme and intense, the pain may be continuous (lasting for hours), or it may come and go in spasms.
