Kitchen
This is the heart of any home, but, because food is prepared and stored here, it can also be the home of many unwanted bacteria. The kitchen sponge, for instance, has been found to harbour more bacteria than the average toilet seat! This section shows you how to keep this very important room clean.
Click on the item on the left to find out why this could be a problem area and what you could do to sort it out.
The sink - problems & solutions
To clean a metal or porcelain sink, use a strong anti-bacterial detergent, this will dissolve food and microbial material; bleach will get rid of any other bacteria.
The sponge - problems & solutions
Studies have shown that the kitchen sponge or cloth harbours the most bacteria of everything in the average home.
The counters - problems & solutions
Countertops harbour lots of germs as food preparation takes place on these surfaces.
The bin - problems & solutions
As foodstuffs and other waste products get discarded in the bin, it is potentially a bacteria haven.
The fridge - problems & solutions
Refrigerators are germ traps for the same reason as kitchen cupboards are – that's where the food is kept.
The ambience - problems & solutions
The kitchen is the true heart of the home.
The stove - problems & solutions
The stove is hot, often humid, and also contains food on a regular basis – in other words, this is germ heaven.
The floor - problems & solutions
Generally, it is a good idea to wash the kitchen floor between two and four times per week. If you have small children, a daily wash could be necessary.
Cutting boards - problem & solution
Grooves in cutting boards are ideal breeding grounds for all sorts of different bacteria, such as Listeria, Salmonella, Campylobacter jejuni and Clostridium perfringens.
The air - problems & solutions
The air in the kitchen could be problematic, as this is the place where cooking is done. Good ventilation is needed to keep the air clean.
Cupboards - problems & solutions
